Penn State DuBois Captures the PSU Hazleton Invitational
Penn State DuBois Golf Team won their second invitational of their inaugural season on Monday in a field of nine teams made up of Penn State branch campuses. The conference invitational was hosted by Penn State Hazleton and was played at the Valley Golf Course in Sugarloaf, PA. Once again, the weather was perfect for golf, sunny skies and little wind.
Sophomore, John Kane (DuBois Area High School) led the PSUD team with an 81 on a par 72 course to earn a second place finish in medal play. DuBois' John Gaylor (Clearfield Area High School) and Derek Buganza (Brockway) were close behind, finishing tied for sixth with 85's. The PSUD squad finished the day with four players in the top ten of the field of over fifty golfers. Tighe Truman (Brookville) posted an 88, tied for ninth to finish out the team scoring. Owen Braun (Mechanicsburg) carded a 91 and Aaron Herzing (DuBois Central Catholic) rounded out the PSUD scoring with a 101.
"Our guys played very well today on a course that was producing some high scores," said Head Coach Pat Lewis. He added, "A first place finish in a nine team field is a special accomplishment for a first year program. We won our first tournament of the year at Penn State New Kensington in August but not all of the teams were present, so this win was special for our golfers. I'm proud of them." PSUD finished with a team score of 339 and now have a conference record of (30-7) and (31-7) overall.
PSUD will now travel to Penn State University for the Penn State University Athletic Conference Championship (PSUAC) and United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships (USCAA) on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 7th and 8th.
